Longaberger To Close Mall Outlet Stores, Focus On Direct Sales

The Longaberger Co. has "hit bottom," but its sales force will benefit from changes made by parent company CVSL, the company stated in a Tuesday conference call.
CVSL, which includes Longaberger as one of its eight direct-selling companies, reported first-quarter revenues decreased by $7.4 million, or 28 percent, compared to 2014.
Longaberger, which has seen its employment fall to 230 total and 68 at its basket-shaped corporate headquarters, has been the main reason for the CVSL revenue decline, according to the CVSL report.
"I think we have hit the bottom at the revenue line," CVSL CEO and President John Rochon said of Longaberger. "We're fixing the company. We have a strategy to get the sales back to the sales force."
CVSL does not report revenues of its individual companies, but did report home decor revenue decreased from $15 million in the first quarter of 2014, to $9.3 million in the first quarter of this year.
Rochon said Longaberger retail stores in shopping malls will be closed, but the Longaberger Homestead will not be affected.
"The whole business of discounting a premium brand makes no sense," Rochon said. "The whole idea of competing with the sales force makes no sense. It's unfair. It's just not a smart thing to do, and we're not going to do it.
"You don't manage those (consultants). The compensation plan manages those people. What happened at Longaberger is they kept disengaging the compensation plan."
Sales at the discount stores produced about $8 million per year, Rochon said.
Tami Longaberger, who recently resigned as company CEO, announced at the 2011 Longaberger Bee that the company would open 18 more factory stores in addition to five stores already open.
Initially called factory stores, then home showrooms, Longaberger sold recently retired Longaberger items and current products were displayed and ordered.
Longaberger opened factory stores at Easton Town Center and Polaris Towne Center in 2010.
"We eliminated a major source of frustration for the sales field," said Russell Mack, a CVSL director. "We're not renewing the leases on those stores."
The first-quarter report states that CVSL income declined "primarily due to the short-term impact of turnaround actions taken at (Longaberger)."
The Longaberger product line has been narrowed, back orders reduced and inventory returned to a sensible level, CVSL officials said.
"Longaberger was a deeply troubled company in steep decline for 12 years," Mack said. "We spent the first two years dealing with fundamental problems we inherited."
Mack said Longaberger has erased all its bank debt, but Licking County Auditor Mike Smith said last month Longaberger was $250,000 behind on its tax increment financing payments to the city of Newark and Licking Valley School District.

CVSL Inc. ("CVSL" or the "Company"), a growing portfolio of direct-to-consumer companies, today reported financial results for the first quarter of 2015 ended March 31, 2015. 
This press release presents revenue on a reported and pro forma basis.  Management believes that, because CVSL is in the early stage of executing its strategy of scaling up the business through acquisitions, the pro forma figure allows for better comparisons with historical results. 
For the first quarter of 2015, reported revenue includes virtually no results from Kleeneze, a UK-based direct-to-consumer company, which CVSL acquired at the end of the quarter, on March 25, 2015. Pro forma revenue is calculated assuming that CVSL had acquired Kleeneze on January 1, 2015.
First Quarter 2015 Financial Highlights
  • Pro forma revenue grew 20.0%
  • Reported revenue declined 27.9%
  • Gross margin improved to 60.6% from 51.3%
  • Reported net loss attributable to common stockholders increased to $4.9 million from $3.1 million
  • Total assets increased by $25.9 million to $83.3 million, including the assets of Kleeneze at March 31, 2015
  • Total cash items, including cash and equivalents, marketable securities, restricted cash and cash held as security deposit, totaled $22.7 million
Management Commentary
"Our reported results were in line with the Company's expectations, said John Rochon Jr., CVSL's vice chairman and chief financial officer.  "Reported revenue was primarily influenced by the ongoing turnaround process at The Longaberger Company. One of our strategies at Longaberger is to get away from excessive discounting, which we believe weakens the brand and ultimately hurts the income of our sales force.
Another is to stop the company's ill-conceived strategy of competing with its own sales force by selling at a discount through outlet mall stores.  While these actions have a negative short term effect on revenue, we believe they make the company healthier and more appealing as an earning opportunity in the long run. The West Coast dockworkers' strike also caused some disruption at Longaberger this quarter, but now we have products flowing more quickly through the supply chain and we've reduced back orders. 
"Turning around The Longaberger Company is the largest factor in these reported results," Mr. Rochon added.  "At Longaberger, we spent the first two years solving fundamental problems that we inherited.  We had to focus on reducing bloated SG&A costs and paying off bank debt to bring Longaberger out of danger.  Now we've begun turning our attention to stabilizing the revenue line.
"Our reported revenue was also negatively impacted this quarter by political unrest in two of Agel's largest markets,Ukraine and Russia, as well as by the unfavorable effect of a strong U.S. dollar versus certain international currencies, such as the Euro.
"A success story of the quarter has been Your Inspiration At Home.  That company's revenue is on a run rate to exceed$15.6 million this year, which is remarkable growth for a company that joined CVSL less than two years ago with annual revenue at that time of only about $1.3 million."
Concluded Mr. Rochon, "Our strategy is to buy companies at favorable prices, apply our expertise to fix them and increase free cash flow, and scale up our portfolio with acquisitions. We're proud of what we've accomplished in a short time. 
Barely two years since making our first acquisition in this sector we've acquired eight companies, uplisted to the NYSE and paid down bank debt.  We're climbing up the ranks of the top 100 direct selling companies as reported by Direct Selling News and we are now one of the fastest growing direct-to-consumer companies in the world. We did all of this while spending, on average, about ten cents on the revenue dollar to acquire our first eight companies.   Even when you factor in the acquisition expenses we incurred we're still bringing these companies into CVSL at a tremendous value."
First Quarter Financial Review
For the quarter ending March 31, 2015, reported revenue was $19.2 million compared to $26.7 million in the first quarter a year ago. Revenue on a pro forma basis, including the revenue of CVSL's most recently-acquired company, Kleeneze, was $32.0 million in the first quarter, representing a 20.0% increase over the first quarter a year ago.
Program costs and discounts were $2.2 million in the first quarter of 2015, versus $5.0 million in the prior year period. Net revenues were $17.1 million in the first quarter of 2015, versus $21.7 million in the prior year period. Cost of sales were$5.4 million in the first quarter of 2015, versus $8.0 million in the prior year period. The gross profit in the first quarter of 2015 increased to 60.6% as a percentage of revenue, compared to 51.3% a year ago.
Commissions and incentives were $5.9 million in the first quarter of 2015, versus $7.0 million in the prior year period. Selling, general and administration costs remained flat at $9.4 million in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the same amount a year ago.
The Company realized an operating loss of $4.2 million in the first quarter of 2015, versus an operating loss of $2.7 million in the prior year's period.
The net loss for the quarter ending March 31, 2015 was $4.9 million, compared to a loss of $3.1 million in the same quarter last year.

Infinitus China to Take 12,700 People to Thailand

Direct selling company Infinitus China is set to organize a gigantic tour group of 12,700 people to Thailand, a move that will smash the record set by another Chinese firm which sent 6,400 of its employees on a grand vacation to France earlier this month.
Infinitus will book 110 flights and 400 coaches for the trip, which is estimated to bring to Thailand a tourism income of 600 million baht (US17.89 million), Apple Daily reported Thursday.
The firm, a mainland subsidiary of Hong Kong-based food giant Lee Kum Kee, is said to be arranging the six-day tour of Bangkok and Pattaya as part of a rewards scheme for its employees.
Juthaporn Rerngronasa, head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, told local media that the Infinitus employees will arrive in batches of 2,000 to 3,000 people from May 10 to 26. A total of 38,000 hotel room nights have been booked in select four-star and five-star hotels.
Thai coordinators of the tour group are also hiring 36 vessels that could accommodate up to 400 each for a cruise on scenic Chao Phraya River which flows through Bangkok and into the Gulf of Thailand.
Juthaporn revealed that the Infinitus tour group could make up for some of the losses in tourism dollars resulting from the drop in the number of Russian visitors amid the depreciation of the rouble.
She said the mainland firm is already setting its sights on organizing a tour of 20,000 people to Thailand next year.
Earlier this month, Tiens Group of Chinese tycoon Li Jinyuan sponsored a four-day vacation in Paris and Nice for 6,400 of its employees to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary.

Before getting started, I knew nothing about network marketing, but I was very excited for the possibilities that the industry offered.

Avon is an iconic American company that has been around for nearly 130 years. But Avon is struggling. And there's not enough makeup in the world to make it more attractive.
Things have gotten so bleak for Avon (AVP) that investors actually pushed the stock higher Thursday following a report of a takeover offer … that turned out to be fake. 
An entity calling itself PTG Capital filed a letter with the SEC claiming that it wanted to buy Avon for $18.75 a share — nearly triple what the stock was trading at on Wednesday. 
Shares surged as much as 20% shortly after news of the filing started to spread. But traders and financial reporters quickly poked holes in the "offer." 
The filing had typos in it. PTG was referred to as TPG on two occasions. (TPG is an actual private equity powerhouse.) 
Phone calls to the London number for PTG's general counsel went straight to voicemail. Google searches turned up no evidence of PTG or the Trose & Cox law firm listed in the filing. 
The stock was halted several times and Avon eventually put out a press release saying that there was no offer and that it could not verify the existence of PTG. 
Shares then fell from their highs but still gained 6% for the day — on five times the average trading volume. The stock fell more than 1% Friday morning. 
The SEC had no comment about how someone could actually get a bogus filing into its system. 
Regardless of who's behind the hoax, the sad fact is that Avon was susceptible to it in the first place. 
Avon had the chance to sell itself for real three years ago. But it turned down bids from rival cosmetics company Coty (COTY). 
The last offer for Coty valued Avon at $24.75 — nearly 25% higher than this week's fictitious offer. 
Saying no to Coty turned out to be a huge mistake. 
Avon stock is now hovering around $7. Sales have fallen for the past three years and are expected to be lower again this year. The company has also lost money for the past three years. 
Avon has struggled to adapt. Who needs Avon Ladies ringing your doorbell when you can buy cosmetics for a lower price online or at your local drugstore? 
It even got kicked out of the S&P 500 index earlier this year because its market value was too small. Avon had been in the blue chip index since 1964. 
You could argue that the only reason Avon is still culturally relevant today is because the company is part of a plot line on the latest season of "Mad Men." But that show takes place in 1970. 
Maybe Avon will turn things around. Being an "old" company doesn't have to mean that you are doomed. After all, the company that replaced Avon in the S&P 500 was HanesBrands (HBI) — which was founded in 1901. 
But investors are not optimistic. The company's best days are clearly behind it and the market obviously wants Avon to try and sell itself — assuming there is a real company out there that wants to buy it.

ForeverGreen Worldwide Corporation (FVRG), a leading direct marketing company and provider of health-centered products, announced financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015.
First Quarter Financial Highlights
  • Total revenues increased 63.2% to $17,198,940, compared to $10,536,402 in the first quarter last year. The company has deferred revenue of $389,672versus $171,885 in the comparable quarter of 2014.
  • Gross Profit for the quarter increased to $13,005,739 compared to $7,977,397and Gross Profit Margins held stable at 75.6%.
  • Operating income was $411,813 compared to $267,002 during the quarter in 2014, a 54% increase.
  • Net income increased 85.2% to $335,378 or $0.01 EPS, versus $181,052 or $0.01 EPS, in Q1 2014. Net income margins increased slightly to 1.9% from 1.7%.
  • Net cash provided by operating activities was $186,356 for the quarter compared to $193,016 in net cash used during Q1 2014.
  • Total assets increased to $8,369,859 at March 31, 2015 compared to $7,709,633 at December 31, 2014. Total liabilities for the first quarter of 2015 were $8,442,538 compared to $8,086,341 at year end 2014.
  • The company currently has no long term debt. As of March 31, 2015, the Company has $1.5 million in debt with a due date of December 31, 2015. Management anticipates it will satisfy these notes payable through increased revenues or negotiation of new payment due dates.
First Quarter Highlights
During the first quarter of 2015, the company experienced exciting updates and international expansion that included:
  • Trackable shipping in North America
  • Rapid growth in AustraliaNew Zealand and Oceania
  • New growth and leadership development in the Middle East and Africa
  • Opening of first European warehouse, in Poland
  • Acquisition of strategic resources and relationships in Brazil
  • Selling its 20 millionth PowerStrip
  • On February 25th, 2015, the company signed a $1,000,000 line of credit with a related party, increasing the companies' ability to better maximize inventory turnover rates.
"We experienced another strong quarter, especially given the normally downward cyclical trends of January and February. Our total tangible assets continue to increase at a far faster rate than our liabilities and the company continues producing positive cash flow. We anticipate strong sales growth during 2015 and 2016 with improving margins," remarkedJack Eldridge, CFO.

The Direct Selling Association (DSA) of United Kingdom (UK) has recognized Saladmaster’s Vice President Ayo Olaseinde for its 2015 Leadership Award.
On April 15, UK DSA announced that Saladmaster had been selected as a finalist for two prestigious awards in the 2015 UK DSA Annual Awards: The Excellence Award and the Leadership Award.
The DSA's Excellence Award is the Top Company Award that is given as recognition for the best overall performance of a member company over the past year encompassing all aspects of business.The Leadership Award honors those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and who are recognized as an industry role model.
Last year, the UK DSA awarded Saladmaster with the 2014 Excellence Award. This year it was announced at the 2015 DSA Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony that Saladmaster Vice President Ayo Olaseinde received the Leadership Award based on the decision of a judging panel of respected DSA Hall of Fame members.

Since 2005, under Ayo's leadership, the company has moved from one dealership to 40+ nationwide and 30+ overseas. In 2014 Ayo was made Vice President for Saladmaster Europe and Africa.

Regeneca Worldwide has concluded their search for a new President and are pleased to announce that Mr. Trent Staggs will now lead the company in this role.

Amway Sees Aging Society As Biz Opportunity

U.S. direct-selling company Amway has found further room for growth in Korea as per-head sales of its health supplement products topped other countries last year, the company founder's son said Sunday. 
In an interview with Korean journalists in Beijing, Sam Rehnborg, president of Nutrilite Health Institute, wholly owned by Amway, said as Korea was one of the world's fastest-aging societies, the demand for health supplements was set to rise in coming decades. 
"China is a huge market compared to Korea," he told The Korea Times after the group interview. "In terms of sales per capita, however, Korea is already a benchmark for our less-developed markets due to Amway Korea's powerful method of marketing, referred to in some U.S. universities as social marketing. It helped the market in Korea to another level." 
To explain what social marketing is, he said, "People buy a product from you not because of all you say about it, but because they look at you and they see something different. It's just like buying a golf club. If the golf club proves it hits 20 yards farther, it is a most powerful method of marketing. It is different from consumer marketing, which requires a lot of money on ads and sales staff to sell the products off the shelves." 
Amway Korea posted 1.023 trillion won ($937 billion) in sales last year, accounting for 8.8 percent of the U.S. direct seller's overall sales, worth 11.581 trillion won. Amway Korea's sales last year rose 3.5 percent from a year earlier, according to data from Amway Korea. 
Amway and its Korean operations earned more than 40 percent of their respective sales last year from health supplements, which are sold under the Nutrilite brand, the data showed. 
In accelerating its drive to expand in Asia, Amway is in the middle of building a botanical research center in Wuxi, Jiangsu. It will be Amway's first farming and research facility in Asia, the president said. 
Amway has a laboratory in Shanghai to study local herbal ingredients and a production facility in Gwangzhou, which processes herbal ingredients bought in China and the U.S. into Nutrilite products. But it does have a farm there. Its main factory for its flagship Nutrilite products is in the state of Washington. 
"We wanted to have a botanical research center in this part of the world to study traditional Chinese herbal products that have unique preventive properties," said Sam, who is the son of Nutrilite founder Carl Rehnborg.
Amway Product Development Director David Groh said the other reason they were in Wuxi is that they had plans for more than just China. 
"What we are trying to do is once we understand and identify a traditional medicine which has value, we figure out how to grow it, manufacture it and scale it up so we can produce traditional Chinese medicines or TCMs," Groh said. "We can just go and buy TCM raw materials from suppliers. We need to develop them to our farming practices and Nutrilite standards. Wuxi will help do that." 
Amway plans to complete its supply chain in China, from planting raw materials and manufacturing TCMs to their packaging, to meet the growing demand in local and global markets. But it did not provide a time frame. 
Amway has more than half its global sales in Asia. It began direct-sale operations in Korea in May 1991.

TriVita Pays $3 Million In Refund Checks For Class Action

Back in the day, about the only people who even thought about drinking cactus juice were prospectors and pioneers who'd gotten lost in the desert. But times have changed and now you can order a whopping four-pack of 32-ounce bottles of Nopalea cactus juice from a company called TriVita.
Why would you want to do that?
Well, according to the company's website, its cactus juice from the blazing hot Sonora Desert of southern Arizona is downright anti-inflammatory. You know, sort of like it fights fire with fire.
Or as TriVita puts it: "Featuring the superfruit of the prickly pear (nopal) cactus, it contains a powerful class of nutrients called Bioflavonoids."
Checks being mailed
Could be but the Federal Trade Commission is mailing nearly 500,000 checks totaling about $3 million to consumers who actually ordered the stuff and, presumably, drank it based on TriVita's claims that the juice, sold under the name Nopalea, would treat a variety of health problems.
In July 2014, the FTC settled charges against TriVita Inc. for using unsupported product claims to deceive consumers, including infomercials with testimonials from consumers who received a commission for selling its products.
The stuff is still being sold but its promoters are, one hopes, being more circumspect in their claims. 
What to do
If you get one of the checks, from the FTC's administrator, Gilardi & Co. LLC, it should be deposited or cashed right away, no later than within 60 days of the mailing date. The FTC never requires consumers to pay money or to provide information before refund checks can be cashed. The amount will vary based upon the amount of each consumer’s loss.
